KC Cup

The KC Cup race last weekend was came off surprisingly well when you consider my preparation. Saturday night I was at the shop cutting brake lines to the right length, mounting tires, and generally building a new bike. Sunday morning arrived and I got to ride my Paragon for the 1st time. Now not only was this the first time on a Paragon but it’s the first time I’ve raced a 29′er. Off we go to pre-ride the course and I find that I can rock the 29′er, it felt and handled as well as anything I’ve ever ridden. I’m sure that some of that is due to our fit guru Steve at the shop setting the bike up to fit just right.

The race gets started and I get a decent start, somewhere in the top ten going into the single-track. The course is awesome considering the amount of rain the Kansas City area has had in the last week. The first lap and a half I’m rolling along in 5th and feeling pretty good before the first twinge in my legs pop up. It’s early in the race and way too soon to start cramping. But that’s what happens and now I’m in damage control. I’m sucking down water and GU’s and it’s just enough to make it through the race. I lost a few places in the last lap but just making it to the finish was an accomplishment today.

There are more details of the race in Mark’s earlier post. The Omaha crew rolled down with a slew of 29′ers and got awesome results. My teammate from KC, Liz, had a good result as well. Two weeks and we are back at the same venue, different course and I’m looking forward to it.
