“Where is your Superfly?” asked Marcee.
“Safely at home” I said.
“Where is your road bike?” she followed?
“With my Superfly” I replied from the saddle of my fixed gear.
“Why didn’t you bring one of them?” Marcee inquired as she adjusted her under seat bag on her carbon/ti Dura-Ace equipped custom.

The answer to that question came about 15 minutes later with the 8:31pm start of the Bull Moon City 17mile Habitat for Humanity charity event. About 450+ riders headed out from the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in downtown Durham. I watched a rider right in front of me make a 90 degree turn into the pack while attempting to clip in to their pedals. Luckily Marcee was there to act as a catch fence for that rider so they didn’t hit the ground. However, Marcee had to pull out her bag of balancing tricks to stay upright.
I laughed out loud for a solid 5 minutes. Luckily no one fell down.
Riding at night with police escort with all these riders wearing rear flashers was a pretty amazing experience. A stop in front of Duke Chapel to listen to an orchestra, and a rest stop in a central city park highlighted a really cool ride.

I met and spoke with two Type 1 diabetic cyclists on the ride. It is always great to speak with others who are working through some of the same things as yourself.
Ride ended with a 3 mile trip up the American Tobacco Trail (rail to trail conversion) back to the DBAP. Big street party followed with a live band, suds, some great food, and of course the favorites – Loco Pops and Rice Krispie Treats.

It’s really nice to get out on the fixie and have fun with friends and teammates for a great cause. No trophies, points, or HRMs needed!
