The Mountain Why

2009-05-22-1933-561I’ve spent most of my life trying to go fast on a bicycle. It all started racing circles on big wheels on the back patio. Before long we were riding big wheels down sets of stairs. Life for me has been a version of The River Why on bikes. The River Why is a fantastic novel about a boy in search of his soul. All his experience comes through fishing and being on the river. Every thought and every event revolves around fishing. I’ve never fished a day in my life but after this book you understand the obsession. Every race is another chance at a dream; a dream magnified by the imagination as I struggle through a brain frying interval.  It’s never been all about racing or even half but it stands as the enduring challenge year after year. It’s getting to be summertime 2009 and I’m wondering what I’ve got. A hungry baby on my chest, a muddy bike, only 18 hours of work this week, and tired eyes. I’m filing away excuses just in case. The ego is a delicate thing for how big it can get. Anyhow, I’m hoping for a couple of good new chapters.  Looking forward to Birmingham next week.
