The agony of da feet
How did this 100 miler thing get so popular? I’ve got a few reasons of my own and all but really? how is it that all these sickos show up willing and able to put there bodies on the line like it matters. It’s war games for grown ups. The warrior instinct is strong, as is the the human body. It’s stronger than most of us would ever imagine. But should it be such a surprise? A hundred thousand years of fighting to survive has bred a species that gathers to ride a hundred miles on dirt for a serious kind of fun. It’s a ritual, perhaps satisfying some visceral instinct. It’s quite a group performance, not easily defined by any cost/benefit rational.
These are the thoughts I’m tossing around after a painful Cohutta 100. Missing the start by 15 min. and clawing my way up through the pack gave my a snap shot of the people in these rides. Fading on backwards gave me a helping of defeat. After a day of ambivalence I can now say I’m not done yet, I’m coming back for more.
