Snow Melt and Rocky Ridge Rides!

Nate pinning the rock line

The snow has melted, so far as I can tell, we will probably still see snow up at the shady higher elevations for quite some time. My favorite mountain is  dry and ready to go, Massanutten dries so fast due to the exposed rocky ridges. These rocks provide some of the most challenging technical ridding that you can imagine. I was looking through pictures over the winter and this one stood out at me again and again. My friend Nate riding a rigid 29er Singlespeed with flat pedals and cotton knickers. This picture was taken on a warm October day when a group of us circumnavigated a small valley ringed by rocky spined Massanutten ridge lines. The line that he cleaned on the Shaw trail is one that I hope to get back to this year but this time I will work up the courage to pull off the big rock moves. Or maybe I won’t, either way sometimes it is the small victories like riding the seemingly unattainable rock line that mean more than a place in a big race…
