Southern Utah–West and then East

Last weekend was the first stop in the Intermountain Cup Race Series. It starts in St. George with the Red Rock Rampage. The fields were as big as we have ever seen them.
Chris finished 5th out of 30 plus competitors. Chris was surprised at his finish spot as he had a slow start. He initially thought he finished about mid-pack or so. The course was pretty full once all the groups started and he could not track who was in his category and who was not. He finished behind Burke Swindlehurst, Alex Grant, Bart Gillespie, and Robbie Squires.

I ended up a ways back in time, but taking third place behind Lynda Wallenfels and Kathy Sherwin. I made some fueling errors, including dropping a bottle on a hand-up. I had Sarah Kaufmann nipping at my rear tire so I could not stop and pick it up. Luckily I was able to hold her off, barely, without any liquid or calories. I was lucky!

This weekend we finally made it down to Moab. We have been watching their weather all winter waiting and hoping to make it down there for some riding. They received an enormous amount of snow this year and the temperatures have been uncharacteristically cold. They sufficiently thawed out though and so we hit the trails.
One of our favorite trails is Sovereign riding it out and back starting at the south end. We like to try and get some miles in also. So we will start at the North end of town and ride the old highway up to the Brand Trails. We take Bar M, to Bar B, Rockin’ A, and Circle O. Then we head towards Nine mile canyon and then Sovereign. We take it North to Dalton Wells road and turn around and ride it back. Then we head back to the car. Yesterday it took us about 4:20.

We refueled at the car and headed to Amasa Back. Amasa Back is one of our favorite short trails.

Another cool thing about Amasa Back is the chance to see BASE jumpers. We were lucky and there were four jumpers right as we were getting back to the car. The sound of the chutes opening in that canyon is the coolest.
