Along for the ride…
I was out there with fellow 29er crew members Mark and Suzanne and a few other’s (including the Champion of North Huron, for yesterday’s epic undertaking down the Keuka Lakefront.
I headed south with the gang for the big ride yesterday. It was going to be a good test for the legs as I put in 5 hours in the hills of Naples the day prior. I needed to see how my body would respond to a back-to-back long day. Check the nutrition, recovery, etc.
I managed to hold on and make it through the ride. Although, it was unbearably cold in the early am, crossing the windswept fields on our way south, I did envy those that peeled off early (it was in the low 20’s and windy). I stayed on though and rolled down the Keuka lakefront.

Suzanne peeled off about halfway down. We rolled on and prior to us heading down and hitting the big climb, we decided the best thing to do is stop at the gas station and fill our tummies with fatty and sugary delight’s literally at the base of the climb.

Needless to say, the legs were like rocks after the rest and the stomach was grumbling the whole way up. Managed to get a decent tailwind across the ridge and catch some nice view from up high (sorry, no camera shots). On the descent, Mark flatted and we took a nice little breather on the side of the road and enjoyed the sunshine.

This stop, would be the only time we could slow Hanggi down. He put in a massive pull for the next 13 straight miles. He churned along on the front, while the rest of slobbered like mad dogs all over our stems. By the time we got to the next village, I was cross-eyed and on the verge of a nice little bonk. Managed to down a few hundred calories of hostess orange cup-cake goodness. (EDIT: click that link, how does one eat 50,000 cupcakes? how much does she weigh? and why would you be proud?). We all were hurting at that point. We fueled up and partook in a little game of finding the biggest calorie count single serve item in the store (A cheese danish with 550 calories, barely beat out a few hostess items).
From there it was a nice stroll home and then off to the pub.
