This past week I was invited to pre-ride the Fat Tire Challenge race course with the group responsible for the event. What a blast I had meeting new riders and learning of how this race came to be. The local temps here in PA were only hitting the 60s for a high so in the deep forest of Clear Creek State Park it was dark and cool. The course itself twists around and basically circles the lot where we started which offers several places for spectators to view the race without going very far at all. As for the trails, well the vary from grassy Gas Well access roads to technical rocky single track (perfect for 29″ wheels). More »

“Sure Lance what should I do?” How about race your bike on a single track course with 18 of Michigan’s finest riders using Bontrager Dry X tires after a rain storm. The key words are “Dry X,” “rain storm” and “single track.” I suppose I should give credit where credit is due. Michigan, with more home foreclosures than anywhere in the country and an obesity problem like no other, is actually home to some of the best trails in the United States and Bontrager makes good tires.

Jones AC X modified without knobs for semi-muddy condtions (bottom) and the orginal Jones AC X for perilous condtions (top). The wider spaced bigger knobs shed mud yet grab the earth. If you are new to cycling, just try different things. More »

Slum. Crushed after a four hour ride but it all worked out with a lake swim complete with modeling session and slide.
After two weeks of non-riding due to inujry/sickness/overuse I got back on the baby blue machine yesterday in the midst of an unseasonably warm heat wave for much of the eastern U.S. of A. In an effort to escape the heat we made a crazed early morning dash for Douthat State park in Clifton Forge Virginia. Some call it Mountain bike Disneyland and with very good reason, a multitude of buff off-camber single track trails wind their way around the park. A handful of raging fast downhills and stellar ridge riding cap off the trail network. Getting back into the groove of things. Harrisonburg’s infamous Tour De’Burg is right around the corner. Gotta rest up. Douthat soothed the body back into riding.

Naples, NY is just too much fun to stay away from. Trails are about 45 minutes away give or take and offer multiple routes, incredible scenery, lung searing climbs and bike busting descents. With the trail building going on at Ontario County Park (check the map for the gory details), the trail network in the area is getting even better.
Last night, I headed for another go with Matt Hanggi down in Naples.
Yup, we climbed up to the top of that overlook and we are heading down into that valley!

Racing has been on the DL the past few weekends. Unfortunately I missed out on the Mohican 100 (Congrats Sam!) even though I registered. It wasn’t all bad though, I got to do quite a bit of riding these past few weeks or so.
Memorial Day weekend was a bone crushing weekend for myself. I managed to put in a 135k epic solo ride on some of my favorite local trails. 8 hours in the saddle, 3300 meters+ of climbing and a great day in the sun.
Last Tuesday I wrapped up the Farmall weeknight series, setting a personal best on the course. I ended up finishing 3rd overall. Seems everyone is getting much much faster as my course record has held up for quite a few seasons and was demolished this past Tuesday. I managed to take a 2nd place in the series, and was happy to come away with that after some hard fought racing.
This past weekend was filled with loads more riding and fun.

Great event brought back into the series this year, course was flat and fast with technical sections put in to slow you down throughout as well. Maybe I should have warmed up a bit more for the elite start as my tush got left behind quickly at this morning’s start.

This past weekend Mark and I headed down (actually up) to Ellicottville, NY for some riding and camping. E-ville has some brilliant single track with lots of rocks, roots, technical challenges, and a few mountains to climb, which my HiFi ate up. We pulled into our camp site on Saturday night, promptly set up our new tent in a world record time, at least for Mark and I, then headed out for a night ride with Trumble and Chris. Nothing like hitting unfamiliar terrain at night. More »

Please don’t tell too many people and try to not let the word get out too much but what we have here in Virginia is really some of the best mountain biking in the world. There are some rides that really help you to differentiate between “good” rides and EPIC back country excursions. Such excursions are not possible or at least not as spectacular unless the conditions are present. They make you appreciate the extraordinary trails that are less than an hour out my door. More »

Vive Il Giro! The call was gingerly echoed throughout my past weekend as the rolling peloton of thirty some mountain bikers meandered through the Virginian Blue Ridge Mountains. Bells rang as spectators and fans alike lined the rural roads to cheer along the riders as the Giro passed through the small hamlets nestled at the foot of the Blue Ridge. Riders the world over traveled far and wide for one of the best and most explosive Giro’s to date. More »

Memorial Day weekend has passed and I’m just starting to recover from all the fun and excitement we had!! It all started on Saturday, with some beautiful weather, we had a great day at the shop, it was great to see so many people anxious to get on their bikes. I was off on Sunday and Monday, so I wanted to get as much in as possible. More »
