Decorah TT

By ctri | 30/04/09 | 2:53 PM

This is a fantastic race every year held in Decorah, Iowa. This year the rain the day before and morning of was sure to make this year’s time trials interesting. Set to start about 90 minutes after the first rider I was hoping that any mud on the course would get pushed out or packed down. Kuske and I had a chance to talk to the first several riders finishing and they said that the course was actually in good shape and they were able to make it up almost every hill on their single speeds. Their bikes and bodies were fairly clean as well.

Well, 100 meters in I quickly realized that this was a different course than earlier. The mud had started to solidify and gave it a sticky, flingy, slow quality. The trails were really chewed up from so many people before pushing through sections that were at one time rideable. I rode as much as I could, but some sections were completely impassable by bike now. There were many sections that I was riding (slowly because of the sticky mud) that had no sign tire tracks in front of me, just chewed up foot prints. Almost halfway through I threw my chain in to the spokes. After at least a minute of swearing, pulling, yanking, and tugging I was finally able to get the chain out and get going again. Ten minutes later it would do the same thing, but only took about 30 seconds to get out that time.  Turns out I had bent my der hanger on a tree during a running section.
Well, I was hoping to go for a top 5 finish. I felt strong and rode well, but my chain problems and the mud convinced me that I was well outside the top ten. Luckily, I still pulled out a ninth place at 51 minutes and some odd seconds. I was very happy with that and happy that my legs had “good sensations”. The bike and body were covered in mud, a far different picture then those first finishers I saw.

The top 5 were littered with guys from the first 30 starters. Strong guys indeed, but I wish I had preregistered and was starting near them. A well deserved win goes to Josh Shively from LaCrosse. My former manager from Smith’s Cycling and Fitness crushed the field by 3 minutes to come in at 44 minutes. He was rocking a single speed Gary Fisher Rig with 1/2 ratio for gearing. Tough indeed and you could not find a nicer guy. Kuske took 7th, 2 minutes in front of me and other local Trevor Olson rocked out a 6th place.

The Paragon was awesome and except for the chain (probably my fault) was a fantastic bike. Did I mention that I love this bike? I do have to say I tried the Bontrager Mud X tires. Kuske and I had fantastic experiences from these tires in the race. There are hands down the only reason I did as well as I did with the mud that I encountered. They are a must have if you are getting mixed up in the mud. Absolutely, amazing condition specific tire. Ran them at under 20psi and got them to air up tubeless with a pump. No air leakage. Awesome.

Now here it comes. Wait for it, wait for it….

Local Knowledge

By James | | 11:22 AM

Maybe it’s because I don’t like the sound of my drivechain disolving  in the grit and grime, maybe it’s moving city in the middle of winter, maybe it’s a ride light - leave no trace attitude.

Whichever, I’ve hardly ridden off-road all winter. So now spring has sprung, I’m in a new place and all around me are wide flat bridleway’s like this:

wide

leading to more wide, flat boring trails. Not good.

Thankfully a sunny evening with a group of local riders this week has resulted in a whole new world opening up:

narrow

Follow this for narrow - tick. Gradient - tick. Rocks - tick. Roots - tick. All good.

Apparently it’s all thanks to a random pocket of leftover 700 million year old metamorphosed marine sediments of the pre-Cambrian era (slate) hidden beneath the trees.

Local trails. Ace.

Cohutta 100 Round 2

Cohutta time has finally come and gone for another year…

Shiny Bike Pre-Race

Shiny Bike Pre-Race

After a little bit of shivering in the dark and cold before the 7 am start, I rolled off on my Superfly SS in the front pack going up the road climb. However, my legs were not really feeling it at the start, and I lost contact with that group coming downhill during the stairstep road climb. Hit the twisty fast singletrack, and I was immediately undergeared with my 32×20. One or two guys caught me in this section, but I made it through it fast enough. The rest of the ride through old copper road back to the whitewater center was uneventful, save for the always fun rock garden at the end. (more…)

Cohutta 100. 29er Mob Scene?

By Fisher Guy | 28/04/09 | 1:27 PM

OK, I wasn’t there, but someone needs to note that Fisher 29ers were the unofficial house bike at the NUE’s Cohutta 100.

The Fisher 29er Crew was all over the top of the results. Michael Simonson standing on the podium. Sam Koerber just off. Travis Mullen, Brent Lester also up there. Dennelle Grant represented on the women’s side. Dave Kelnberger on the Masters box.

Dave Holmes and Jon Robbins forgot their gears, raced 100 miles on one gear… and crushed.

In the more “sensible” 65-mile race, Marcelle Vanore was #2. Zdenek “Z” Fiebinger wasted no time on his new Superfly SS, taking the top spot on the singlespeed 65-miler.

And for good measure, Chris Beck, adopted son of the Subaru-Gary Fisher team was third on his Superfly.

Sheesh. By my count, that’s a football team.

Cohutta 100 Women 6th -10th8th place finish!  Hooray.  That’s me in the middle.   Congrats to all of the other 29er crew members out there… not to mention everyone else on a SuperFly or SuperFly singlespeed (& there were quite a few on the race course).

Notes to Self…

1. Cliff blocks CAN be considered a meal (Cherry flavor is a dessert)

2. Find more races that end near a river/stream

3. Spring training shouldn’t be an 1-day event, even if its 100 mi

The Ocoee

The Ocoee

Well, it was a spectacular day…cool start but with a .8 mile climb and then another .5 climb for a total of 3 miles of road to start the coolness didn’t last long!  Didn’t blow up and got into the singletrack with a fun SS train.  Left them after a while and blew threw the first 15 miles pretty quickly.  Once on the FS Road, the climbing commenced and it lasted ALL DAY!  25 miles in my stomach did the same thing as the 6hrs of Warrior Creek last month!  OUCH!   Struggled for a bit but had some boiled potatoes and salt at  stop 3 and sailed for the next 10+ downhill section…reaching almost 40mph on a few occassions…I love speed, for better or worse and the XR1’s are now my weapons of choice!   Finally had some good results with food and drink and hated the loooong way in on the FS road that didn’t want to end.  At least it was in the shade for a bit as the temp hit a near record high of 87 or so!  The black jersey was almost all white!   Suffered on the last bit of “climbing” singletrack and nailed the downhill passing a few people just before it started!  Finished in 9:01:38, just over a minute off my expected time!

What amazed me was the 29er Crew representation at the race!  Besides 99% of the Crew riding Superfly’s (JEALOUS!!), I counted probably 30 total Fly’s!  WOW, the word got around fast.  The HiFi Pro worked well but dang, I would love to try the carbon goodness!

Payback

By Marcelle | 27/04/09 | 10:25 PM

So I raced on the road…that meant it was time to drag the girls in the dirt…or should I say mud!! I love to ride with Lori and Lisa. Mostly because they like to laugh and have fun on the bike. The fact that they make me go way faster than I am usually in the mood for is a side bonus!
We decided that we would go and race the Grind on the Greenway last minute. Don’t let the name fool you…it is fast single track with a small patch of gravel road. It rained the night before so there was plenty of mud to make you think twice. They were going to do a duo, Darren (another one of our pavement peeps) and I were going to race solo. We set up the tent, set up our table, checked all of our equipment and we were ready to go.
We took off!! The trail was super fast in some sections and tricky in others. I was the first woman in the woods so I took off to try and make some time. I am racing through a fast section setting a good pace when I see something in the trail. I slam on brakes…its a turtle!! I toss down my Superfly so I can save the turtle when I hear some guy yell what are you doing!! I’m clearly standing there with a turtle in my hand…I decide not to state the obvious.

After a little turtle saving I got to get in some good riding.  It was a great feeling at the awards ceremony to watch the fisher 29er crew take  first place male solo, first place SS solo, first place female solo and the fisher road team take first place master male solo, and 2nd place duo female!!  I would say that was a good day on the bike…riding fast, riding with friends, and a little turtle saving!

Applebees……Kills racers hopes of shine!

By Adam Hart | | 9:28 PM

111So yesterday was the Kenda Cup #5 in Los Olivos, CA. Skipping Sea Otter due to lack of funds sucked but, it also allowed me to get better prepared for big #5. My nutrition was dead on and my training had my legs feeling like the pistons in a big block powering a muscle car! It was the Wednesday before race day Sunday. I had an easy spin to fallow my Tuesday speeds and I was feeling my strongest finish this season coming into my future. The wife and I were a bit hungry and really didn’t feel like making anything at home. Well, it was all down hill from there folks.
We headed off to Applebees. I wanted something lite and the Spinach and grilled shrimp salad caught my eye. It tasted fine for being Applebees. Less than two hours later I lost everything! All my hydration, electrolytes, nutrients…EVERYTHING! It all went down the drain so to speak! I knew I was screwed in having any hopes to do well at all the coming Sunday. One of my biggest faults is I’m always optimistic and look to the bright side of things. I figured in the next 3 days I could consume a container of Hammer Recoverite and drink my self plump and get everything back. Well, no such luck. My stomach shrank so I couldn’t eat. Of course not eating made my head pound and in those 3 days I got about 10 ours of sleep total. Did this stop me? Of course not, I’m an idiot who loves to ride, race and do anything involving a bike. It finally stopped raining, oh wait…

It finally stopped raining in Kansas long enough to get a race in this past weekend. I was a bit worried going into the race considering the loss of skin from a crash the prior weekend while at a criterium. The course at the Gods Country MTB event was flat and fast along the river, ton’s of twists and turns made for a bike handlers dream. I got a decent start and blasted into the lead going into the first turn off the levy. The drag race to the entrance of the singletrack found me chasing local Pro Aaron Elway. Through the lap I was losing a bit of time on the leader but had pulled away from the chasing riders  so it was time to go as hard as I could to the finish of the race. In the end the gaps held and I ended up with a 2nd place. Pretty happy with the result for the first race on the Superfly. Spent a bit of time talking to other riders about all of the Bontrager goodies on the bike as well as answering the number 1 question, “how much does it weigh”?

Hopefully next two weeks I’ll be raceing in Nebraska….if the rain stops!

Hi, it’s just me again.

gravel sunset, nothing finer

gravel sunset, nothing finer

Man oh man has it been hot around here. I’ve been thinking of those poor souls that got cooked at the Cohutta 100 this past weekend. When you line up to do a hundy some stuff has to play in your favor. Riding into a blasting furnace is not a card I’d like to be dealt. I know that from experience but I’m sure all had a good time. Good story collectors those 100 milers.

Anyhoo, I’ve been doing a little cooking around the neighborhood. (more…)
