Riding bikes is fun

By jhilimire | 29/10/08 | 3:50 PM

My last post was a bit ago. Ever since moving out here to CO, things have been a bit of a whirlwind. It’s been a super busy last 5 days, that’s for sure. But it doesn’t mean I haven’t ridden my bike at all. How can one not when the weather is 75 and sunshine (meanwhile it’s snowing back in NY!!)

I managed to get myself in gear and do a cross race this past sunday. Nothing like lining up against the pro/1/2 guys having very little time on the bike, at altitude and a lack of fitness. Somehow, I mistimed the start and was spit out the back immediately. I swear I never heard a countdown or anything similar. Chase hard, run up the sand, ride in the sand, run up the sand. It was a tough course, I ended up flatting at the start of my 4th lap and called it quits. At least I wasn’t in last place though. So as if that wasn’t enough, I went and signed up for the Boulder Super Cup Weekend, 2 UCI races in Boulder this weekend, Running with the big dog’s again! Hopefully I’ll do a bit better.

Speaking of dog’s I managed to get Lizzy out on her first trail ride since she broke her pelvis. I took her over to Green mt. on the singlespeed on Monday. I’m guessing the loop was about 12-14k, but some good climbing. This isn’t east coast trails, as she’s stuck running the whole time and no place for short cuts. But, she did great! Even when she saw a herd of mule deer, she managed to heed my command and not chase!! Maybe that truck she hit, knocked some sense into her!

Treasure Valley Rally

By Michael | 28/10/08 | 7:25 PM

I just had the online/pc issue all taken care of and can actually start updating! Crazy not having a computer but now cyclocross and current events will pop up after I finish the race season postings. 2008 has been great and I look forward to 2009.

Treasure Valley Rally

Two weeks off, had some time to get ready for this one by sleeping and getting some time in on the bike. Felt better when I got to the EFTA in NH for the new XC race on schedule.

The course started out fast with some wide track in the first ½ mile before hitting single track, four of us riding together John Foley and Nathan Rinquist attacked while Paul Simoes and I followed. Paul lived nearby and knew the course very well so we made up time on techy areas and were together again until the steep climb.

Paul’s single speed status slowed him down a bit there and allowed the three of us to get away as we headed into the second lap. John attacked again on lap two and was almost out of sight as we were sliding through a wet, rocky/rooty section, it was then that Nathan slid out a bit and I got by.

Finally caught up to John as we hit lap three and followed him until single track section approached, attacked in the woods and managed to escape mid lap.

The course turned out to be great, plenty of fast open sections along with technical single track that was almost impossible to ride in certain sections.

Always great to racing with EFTA!

“Calling Pittsburgh” The Ally Cat

By stork | 27/10/08 | 5:00 AM

Preparing_for_the_ac Saturday found me in the garage for most of the day setting up my Ferrous & Rig single speeds for the off season winter riding that lays ahead. Later in the afternoon I dropped the wrenches in order to make my way into downtown Pittsburgh to attend my first Ally Cat. Being an out of towner of some sort I parked at one of the Trek Concept stores and rode the Mendota over to the start. Here I was given a starting time worksheet which had me adding minutes and sandbags as penalties for having a licenses & gears but thankfully my bike which tipped the scales at over 27 pounds didn’t cost me anymore time than the 4 minute penalty already accrued. I hooked up with a few friends Blockhead (Chris-mechanic at the Robinson Store), Mike Henninger & Cory Lev. (more…)

oh my.

Dan k “The Fisher 29er crew rider rides past here,” (not Joe the plumber). While out for a leisurely training night ride last night in preparation for the Iceman (2000 + bike race in November in Michigan)…this sign in Ann Arbor Michigan stands. “Say it ain’t so Joe!” Stopping for a burrito last night he (Dan k.) pulls his carbon Super Fly into the small shop, orders his veggie bean burrito and it gets looks from all the Frat boys (as no one pulls a bike inside)…of course the chicks are checking me (third to first person narrative change…get with it you are now post-modern, like Fisher himself ahead of the curve) in his form and so fine fitting gear…’oh my’…as if I can read their minds, yeah right.  And of course the dudes want to go buy a Fisher now. On a college campus with thousands of students and thousands of bikes, that is how it works, when one out of the pack pipes up, “Is that carbon?” Then begins the 15 minute Q & A conversation as to why Fisher/Trek bikes are better and the fact it is carbon. Sure I plan on top 20 at Iceman, but this Q & A if more valuable than a first place. They seem convinced regarding the Fisher merits, who wouldn’t be, Fisher is superior and the belief in what you ride is so important. Another potential sale but more important…another human on a bike…another car sleeping…another healthy soul. If you are not a rider, “become fit for life.” If you love to ride you will love a Fisher. If you love to race, you will be in front on a Fisher; on this 2003 day since the declaration of “Mission Accomplished” in Iraq. The life you can experience on a bike is amazing. Join us and the thousands of other cyclists around the world in our quest for life through the lens of a bike and do it on a Fisher– it will fill your life with indelible pictures and the most amazing memories.

Tandem ‘Cross

By gkuyper | 20/10/08 | 7:59 PM

I ventured into the world of ‘cross this weekend. I have been meaning to try cross this year and when Brian asked me to ride stoker on the back of the tandem it was easy to say yes after all who doesn’t want all the thinking taken out of their first ‘cross race. At to the mix a showdown of epic proportions with a second tandem toeing the line and it made for a great day. We lined up at the back of the C race and quickly made our way to the front riding in second position for the majority of the race. At some point near the end of the last lap we fell back to third place, which coincidently netted us a sixer of Founder’s IPA, we held our place while enjoying the optional stream crossing and handily beat the other tandem in the race.

Despite it being a “fun” race I can say that I had a bit of the scorched lung cough going after not warming up and pushing it most of the race. I am hooked and if I hadn’t torn my shorts on the tandems kickstand on a clumsy barrier jump I would have hopped right back into the action but instead choose to enjoy my winnings and encourage others to take the wet option, even if it was a touch longer. Two weeks until the next cross race and I can’t wait. A big gear on one of my rigs and some skinny little knobbies and I will be set, hopefully.

Dusk till Dawn and beyond

By James | 15/10/08 | 6:46 AM

I’d like to start by apologising to the local riders of Thetford forest for my part in trashing your trails at last weekends ‘Dusk till Dawn’ race. If you were annoyed with the braking bumps on the singletrack after round one of the national points series this year, then the mess created by 1000 riders going round and round some of your prime singletrack through the night in the rain for 12 hours will leave you feeling pretty gutted!

1st Ride in Colorado

By jhilimire | 14/10/08 | 10:34 AM

I’m now officially in Colorado. Made it here this past Saturday. I’ve since gotten settled in here with a friend in Littleton and managed to get out for a good ride yesterday on 2 trails that are right outside the door (Bear Creek and Green Mt.) Conditions were great, it was a little bit cool, but the sunshine was warm.

Please, send oxygen instead of comments. I’m in need of some until I acclimate!

Mountain Bike Festivaltivities

table drop on little little bike

Riding bikes, trail work, party games, camping, eating, drinking, repeat for the rest of the weekend. Oh and ride little bikes any way possible especially down the dual slalom or off picnic tables. Another year and another great SVBC mountain bike festival out at Stokesville campground in the George Washington National Forest. It was that kind of weekend.

I even learned a thing or two, namely that the Little River roadless area (which comprises a vast portion of the land west of Harrisonburg, VA) is the largest roadless area east of the Mississippi, go figure. No wonder it is such an incredible place to ride a bike. 26,000 acres of land that is off limits to road building. Not to mention the handful of other roadless areas in the vicinity. These include the Jerkemtight roadless area, home to an IMBA epic ride of the Southern Traverse as well as Elliots and Crawford roadless areas. All amazing places to ride a bike.

dual-slalom.jpg

These incredible areas deserve much greater protection especially as roadless legislation falls under attack by the Bush administration and conservative federal judges around the country. Recently the George Washington National Forest created a map of all the potential WILDERNESS areas in the GWNF and of course these all qualified. But that would mean no bikes and no mechanized trail work tools to build new trails and or maintain the pre-existing trails.

Almost over…

By stork | 13/10/08 | 4:57 AM

Fox_creek_2008 Made another trip west yesterday for the Fox Creek Outdoor Expo which had one of the last remaining OMBC races for this season there. Wonderful day in the woods with the fall foliage & friends. Big thanks to Bob Myers for stopping by on his Mendota & the BW3 wings after the race. Also a thanks to Lindsay’s dad Al for the water bottles & photos. Look at all these guys getting serious & checking equipment at the line…I was more worried about my music! Tick Tock Tick Tock the season is coming to an end. I managed to place the Superfly 29er on the podium for the day. Grest bikes and great times..

Dolly Sods.

By TJ Platt - PA | 09/10/08 | 2:59 PM

This past weekend I went racing.   Kim (my  G.F.) and  I took a long weekend, pointed the car south, and enjoyed the time in Canaan Valley West Virginia.

kim-and-i-on-seneca.jpg What a wonderful place to have a mini-vacation.  The picture of us is on the top of Seneca Rocks, just south of Canaan.  We also visited Smoke Hole Caverns  down the road about 12 miles or so from that.   Also a very interesting tourist attraction. (more…)
