Made the 6 hour trek to Delaware/Maryland for the first xc race of the Mid Atlantic Super Series. I was looking forward to seeing some of what I consider to be the best people to race with. The long drives to these races are always forgotten after shaking hands with all the great people I’ve come to consider friends. Another good part about this series is that it never has a lack of ultra competitive athletes in every class. Rather than attending a smaller race closer to home I would prefer to hit a venue like the Mass where in this particular case there where 400+ pre registered riders for a race slated as a shine only event (weather was calling for rain sat & sunday in the area). Started out to be such a nice week, sunny skies and temps in the 70s. Until race day came along…… More »

It’s been a pretty decent week here in Upstate NY. As usual for the weather it was short sleeves and shorts mid-week and windproof tights and jackets on the weekend. At least the sun was shining the whole time.

boxes are overwhelming
I just sat. I looked at my boxes. I could see no breath, for if it was cold it would be warm but it was warm not cold, either way…it was like all life was sucked out of me, my breath was gone. The handicap man at the store, the oversize lady at the bank, or Jeremy the autistic kid who walks around my block bouncing a ball every few steps always remembers my name, “Your name is DAN”; these people don’t ride bikes. The breadth and width of these boxes in my family room, in my foyer… More »

it felt like the ruins of a terrible war. blown up walls. shrapnel littering the ground. animal carcasses strewn about. an incredibly urban setting to start of the two thousand eight season at the sylvan island stampede in rock island, il. a warmup of a lap or two of the course got the ride flowing. its been a while since we rode this singletrack stuff. from the gun it came
back quick. jesse and i got snaked by a rider into the singletrack but jesse made quick work of him a mile later. i was stuck waiting for the moment to attack and latch back onto the pain train. three minutes later and the 29er crew caboose was rollin. i followed the lines of jesse as we continually put more and more time into the chasers. on the fourth lap i decided to give the bro a break and took over the pacing. we stopped getting time gaps after it outgrew the four minute mark. with a lap and a half to go jesse attacked and my lack of skills started to show. he quickly opened up at fifteen second gap just as the pin on my front brake decides to leave me. i chased hard but in the end the gap was thirty seconds. a good opener and a good sign of fitness. a few weeks and we’ll be back at it again.

So with the sun coming out yesterday and drying up the trails from Fridays ran I decided to head out to the local trailhead to rip it up for a few hours. After a good ride with some of my old teammates we headed back to the parking lot to get some much needed nutrition, to find that the parking lot was covered with cars. Being that I live in a more road oriented cycling community, this kinda came as a shock to us. I saw my bosses car from the shop and decided to hang around to see who all showed up. After a few minutes they all began to roll into the parking lot, and as a Fisher 29er representative, an avid bike fan, and also as a shop mechanic, I was excited to see that out of the 7 riders who rolled into the parking lot, only 2 of those to be on those little wheeled contraptions some people call mountain bikes. So including my group and the other group we had a total of 9 29ers ripping up the trails. 5 Superflys, a rig, a supercaliber, and a Hi-Fi Plus, the other guy was on an IF, but I gotta give him props for the custom bling and repping the 29er cause. So it is safe to say that down here in the dirty south, Anniston, AL, we are representing the Fisher 29er revolution. Big props to Wig’s Wheels down here in Anniston for pushing these bad azz bikes and getting the word out on Fisher bicycles.

I recently heard a rumor that 29ers are sluggish in tight single track. Slow to react and tough to maneuver through the intestines of a course. If the Darkness and I had a chance to put the back fence talk to rest it was today. The venue was a bit off the beaten path but due to a friends wedding we linked up an action packed weekend of dancing and racing. Enter the Sylvan Island Stampede in Moline, Illinois. A foot bridge separates this technical but fast course from the main land and boasts miles of single-track when linked properly. We decided to get our moneys worth and enter the expert class on our singles as we so often do which proved to be a smooth move as we worked the whole shot aside a mercy/specialized rider. I was second into the track as Marko trailed in fourth. I noticed a couple bobbles by the lead rider so I took the initiative on the right and muscled a pass. The season opener adrenalin kicked in as I quickly gapped the passed rider and disappeared up trail. In the meantime Marko appeared to be making quick work of the chasers as I caught glimpses of the action while switch-backing the course. It wasn’t long before the Darkness and I regrouped and went to work which created a two minute gap by lap two. We continued to roll our pink and blue steeds further and further up trail as the race neared completion. With both of us running into front brake issues I attacked Marko with 1.5 laps to go. It’s not that gratifying to attack your own brother but I have to take advantage while I can as he’ll only get stronger as the season progresses. Fending off arm cramps, yes rigid arm cramps I held Marko off by 30 seconds for my first win of 2008. Overall, the event was great. The bikes practically rode themselves and the teamwork was enough to make a mother cry. We’ll be busy practicing our bikes over the next two weeks but then it’s back to killing dreams at Rock Cut.

A week of ups and downs for sure. The biggest downer has to be the fact that old man winter just won’t go away. Monday and Tuesday were thwarted. The window was cracked ever so slightly on Wednesday, only to be slammed shut with equipment woes. My season opener was subsequently postponed, waking Saturday to a dusting of snow, all along the way having three of my 1st Amendment rights challenged.
On the positive side of the karma swing I got a sweet new kit (thanks Travis), was named dealer of the month for 1W2W (Thanks Rebecca). For which I recieved this absolutely bad ass Ag bag. It’s made from recycled tubes and seat belts. The 76 refers to the percentage of recycled materials used. Staying on the subject of 1W2W, check out 2 Mile Challenge. What can you access in your 2 miles? If it wasn’t for commutting this winter the eight ball would be even bigger than it already is. It’s only April though right?
So now it’s 2 more weeks before the legs will truly be tested. 2 more weeks hopefully of attacking singletrack, and warmer weather. Mother Nature be kind…please?

Well it seems that Phil and I won’t be out on the trails anytime soon. We got hit by two dumpers in one week and snow is in the forecast through the weekend. When will it end?
